3rd Grade Scoop – Week of May 7

Upcoming Events:

Verse: Matthew 5:14 “You are the light of the world.  A city on a hill cannot be hidden.”

 

Bible: We talked about what it means to be the light of the world.

 

Math: We completed unit 9 and began unit 10 which is over Units of length.  Please refer to the family letter for extra ways to practice these concepts.  Don’t forget about the fun math games on Everyday Math online.

 

Reading: We read Ch. 10-12 of The Mouse and the Motorcycle.  Our activities included searching for adjectives and completing a venn diagram comparing Ralph’s family reunions to our family reunions.  We also made helmets for Ralph out of ½ a ping pong ball.

 

Handwriting: We focused on our names and our spelling words.

 

Technology: Typing will be part of our center rotation each week for the rest of the year.  If your child types on the computer at home, encourage him or her to use the correct posture and typing position.

 

Writing: Journal prompts: “Free choice” , “Tell what you would do if you could stay up all night.”, and “What kind of person would make a good president?”

Grammar: We are doing a review unit on capitalization. Our word of the week was “staunchly”.

Spanish: We practiced individual readers- reading aloud one at a time.

Social Studies: We are working on our final social studies unit: The 13 Colonies.        We learned about “the lost colony” and John Smith’s settlement: Jamestown.  We worked on following oral directions as we made our own maps of Jamestown.

 

P.E.: We practiced for field day!

 

Science: We are now working on Geology.

1st/2nd Grade Scoop – Week of May 7

Core Knowledge

Thank you for coming to our Mom’s and Muffins Reading Restaurant. We hope you enjoyed your restaurant experience and seeing what all your child has done this year. We are so proud              of all their hard work.

 1st grade math: They were introduced  to double digit addition without regrouping as well as triple digit addend addition problems.

2nd grade math: They were introduced to division this week. We talked about how it is the opposite of multiplication.

 1st grade Social Studies: We worked on an Angry bird experiment and building process.

 2nd grade Social Studies: We finished up our Civil Rights Movement reports and presentations. They did a great job of putting their projects together all on their own.

Field Day: Field Day will be on Wednesday the 16th. Field day will take place in the morning time.

Last Day of School: Our last day of school is Thursday the 24th. We will be having an all-school picnic at 11am on Friday the 25th.

 

The “Special” Report

PE: We practiced hurdles for our field day. Field Day is Wednesday May 16.

Science: We continued to work with scales and weighing objects.

Chapel: We did not have Chapel this week.

 Instruments:  We did not have instruments this week.

 Spanish: We learned the Spanish names for farm animals.

PK4 Scoop – Week of May 7

Theme: Author: Leo Lionni

Bible Story: Jesus Heals the Blind Man (John 9:1-11, 35-38)

Bible Verse:  “Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.” Luke 11:10

Life Principal: Problem Solving (def.  Finding solutions or answers)

Special Attractions:

  • School Picnic: Friday, May 25, at 11:00

Writing Area: This week we introduced the last Letterland character Zig Zag Zebra. We learned how to make the letter “Z” and the sound it makes. We now can write numbers 1-10.

Science: Ms. Laurie talked about sharks and the children were able to see shark teeth.  At the Discovery Table, children explores puzzles with numbers and locks. There was also a turtle shell to examine.

 Dramatic Play: Our children pretended they were going grocery shopping.

Bible Center: Children drew pictures in their Life Principal journal depicting how they use problem solving.

 Art: We created pictures to remind us of the books we have been reading. We made watercolor chameleons, explored what happens when yellow and blue mix together, and even created our own picture of Swimmy working together with the other fish.

 Math: Children worked on sorting by color, shape, and size. They also worked on puzzles to help them identify numbers and practice their counting.

Sensory Table: Children played with turtles.

 Books Read: A Color of His Own, Little Blue and Little Yellow, Swimmy, Fish is Fish, and It’s Mine. The class favorite was A Color of His Own.

 A Note from Ms. Stephanie & Ms. Leah:

 

  • Don’t forget! We still need a few more paper grocery sacks. We will be using them on Monday as part of our art project. Just place them in your child’s parent folder.
  • We enjoyed having all of the moms and special friends in our classroom on Thursday. Thank you for allowing us to celebrate you.
  • We will be making a special keepsake pillowcase the last week of school. Please send to school next week a white or pastel colored pillowcase so Ms. Leah and I have time to do the prep work before our last few days together. THANK YOU!!!

PK4 Scoop – Week of April 30

Theme: Rainforest

Bible Story: Zacchaeus (Luke 19)

Bible Verse: “Forgive as the Lord Forgave You.” Colossians 3:13

Writing Area: This week we introduced the Letterland character Yellow Yo-Yo Man. We learned how to make the letter “y” and the sound it makes. We started working on writing our first and last name together. They also worked on sorting pictures based on their ending sounds. We also began working on writing our numbers.

 

Science: Ms. Laurie introduced the concept of geology and discovering how different kinds of rock weight different amounts.  At the Discovery Table, children explores scents from the rainforest, such as cocoa, nutmeg, black pepper, allspice, and tea.

 

Dramatic Play: Our children pretended they were going to explore the rainforest to discover what animals live there.

 

Sensory Table: Children floated frogs on lilypads.

 

Bible Center: Children drew pictures in their Life Principal journal depicting how they show forgiveness.

 

Art: We created our own rainforest, painted monkeys on a vine, and worked on our special gifts for Moms and Muffins,

 

Math: Children had several choices at math this week. They worked on ordering monkeys by what number was on them. They played memory with rainforest animals, and counted caiman and placed them in the swamp with the matching number.

3rd Grade Scoop – Week of April 30

Math: We continued working more complex multiplication problems.We learned the lattice method for solving multiplication, and several of our students are loving it!Please continue to work with your child on basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems on a regular basis.These facts are the building blocks for the rest of their math careers!Don’t forget about the fun math games on Everyday Math online.

Reading: We did our testing during this time. Our class worked so hard and I just know they did great!

Handwriting: We have finished our handwriting books and will review cursive the rest of the year.

Technology: Typing will be part of our center rotation each week for the rest of the year.If your child types on the computer at home, encourage him or her to use the correct posture and typing position.

Writing: Journal prompts: “If you could spend the afternoon with any member of your extended family, who would it be and why?How would you spend your time?”, “What is your dream vacation?Why?”

Grammar: We continued our study of pronouns. Our word of the week was “nuisance”.

Spanish: We completed our animal unit and ended with a quiz.Our Cinco de Mayo Fiesta, full of art and food, was a blast!They are all doing so well in Spanish!

Social Studies: We are working on our final social studies unit: The 13 Colonies. We learned the differences between the New England, Middle, and Southern colonies.We compared and contrasted with a picture venn diagram.

P.E.: We practiced for field day!

Science: We continued our rainforest unit.Thanks Dax for bringing your snake, Rose, for a visit to our class!

PK4 Scoop – Week of April 23

Theme: Farm, Cowboys, & Oklahoma

Bible Story: Samuel Helps at the Tabernacle (1 Samuel 1:28 – 2)

Bible Verse: “Work as if working for the Lord.” Colossians 3:23

Life Principal: Effort (def.  A strong attempt to do something )

Special Attractions:

School Picnic: Friday, May 25

Writing Area: This week we introduced the Letterland character Fix-It Max. We learned how to make the letter “X” and the sound it makes. We continued working on writing our name.

Sensory Table: Children scooped and panned for gold.

Science: Ms. Laurie continued talking with the children about the Rainfrest. At the Discovery Table, children used beans, corn, or sunflower seeds to write their name. There was also different types of cactus for them to observe.

Dramatic Play: Our children pretended were on the farm, gathering eggs, and working in the farm house.

Bible Center: Children drew pictures in their Life Principal journal depicting how they will effort to run in the Amazing Race..

Art: We made cactuses, Oklahoma’s state wildflower the Indian Blanket, and a counting cowspots book. They also drew a picture in their self-portrait journal as if they were a cowboy or cowgirl.

 Math: Children had several choices at math this week. They sorted farm animals by type and color. They also practiced making shapes out of rope and sorting shapes.

3rd Grade Scoop – Week of April 16

Upcoming Events:

April 27: Amazing Race- you may continue to bring donations up until this date.  Let’s make this the best Amazing Race ever!

April 30-May 4: Elementary testing week.  Please do not schedule any appointments during this week.  It is important that your child is here all week to complete the tests with the class.

May 9: Moms and muffins

 

Verse: John 25:11 But Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life.  He who believes in Me will live, even though they die.”

 

Bible: Our there for this month is “He has risen!”  We discussed and wrote about the things we can do to keep our flame for God burning.

 

Math: We completed unit 8 working more in depth with fractions.  Please continue to work with your child on basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems on a regular basis.  These facts are the building blocks for the rest of their math careers!  Don’t forget about the fun math games on Everyday Math online.

 

Reading: We read ch. 3-5 of The Mouse and the Motorcycle and took a quiz.  For art, we drew motorcycles and labeled its parts.

 

Handwriting: We have finished our handwriting books and will review cursive the rest of the year.

 

Technology: Typing will be part of our center rotation each week for the rest of the year.  If your child types on the computer at home, encourage him or her to use the correct posture and typing position.

 

Writing: Our focus this week was friendly letter.  We wrote thank-yous to Sara, our tour guide from the Humane Society Adoption Center.

Grammar: We learned the four types of sentences: declarative, imperative, interrogative, and exclamatory.

Spanish: Our current unit is animals.  We each chose an animal and wrote four sentences, in Spanish, describing our picture.

Social Studies: We began our final social studies unit: The 13 Colonies.  Our week began with an introduction to why colonists came from England and ended with creating a timeline of the events leading up to the Declaration of Independence.

 

Science: We began our rainforest unit.

Writing Area: This week we introduced the Letterland character Walter Walrus. We learned how to make the letter “W” and the sound it makes. We practiced writing words found in Eric Carle books.

 

Sensory Table: Children scooped and sorted dirt as they looked for “plastic” insects.

 

Science: Ms. Laurie continued talking with the children about the Rainfrest. At the Discovery Table, our friends had fun playing with earthworms and watching them as they burrow into the dirt.

 

Dramatic Play: Our children pretended they were outside looking for butterflies and capturing them into our butterfly net.

 

Bible Center: Children drew pictures in their Life Principal journal depicting how they show gentleness at home.

 

Art: We made spiders, butterflies, and created the life cycle of the butterfly. They also drew a picture of their favorite Eric Carle book in their Author Journal.

 

Math: Children had several choices at math this week. They practiced one to one correspondence with ladybug math.  They played a Very Hungry caterpillar game, and they sorted animals by insects and not insects.

We worked on our multiplication facts 1-5. Please be using the flash cards that were sent home to practice daily. This will help tremendously with mastering their facts and helping them with their work.

We finished our unit on the Civil War. Make sure to check out the lap-books they made and have them tell you everything they have learned.

We are reviewing all concepts that we have learned this year.

PK4 Scoop – Week of April 9

Theme: Noah’s Ark

Bible Story: Noah’s Ark (Genesis 6-9)

Writing Area: This week we introduced the Letterland character Noisy Nick. We learned how to make the letter “N” and the sound it makes.

Sensory Table: Children helped Noah load the animals in the ark.

Science: Ms. Laurie introduced the children to the rainforest.  At the Discovery Table, The children explored what happens when you mix colors at the Discovery Table. You can try  this at home with food coloring and water. Be sure to ask you  child about the rainbow in  a jar that we made.

Dramatic Play: Our children pretended they were helping Noah and his family built the ark.

Art: We made rainbows and kaleidoscopes. The children were also able to make animal tracks. We drew a picture in our tree journal.

Bible Center: Children drew pictures in their Life Principal journal depicting how they show character.

Math: Children laced animals, put together Noah’s Ark puzzles and even worked on simple addition puzzles. During math, we focused on the concept of more and less and comparing groups of similar objects using those words to describe .
